What we collect
Your email address, the role you choose (student or landlord), and the profile details you give us (name, university, listing details). Students who sign in with a .ac.za email are marked verified. We also store the applications, reviews, and messages you create on the platform.
How reviews stay anonymous
Place reviews are shown to others under an anonymous handle, never your name. We keep an internal link between a review and its author only to prevent abuse and to comply with the law — it is not shown publicly.
Your reputation as a student
Landlords can review you as a tenant. This information is personal data and is shared only with you and with landlords you choose to apply to. You can always see what has been said about you on your dashboard.
Why we process your data
To run the marketplace: to show listings, route applications, enable resident chat, calculate trust rankings, and keep the platform safe.
The DigsHub assistant (AI)
Some listings offer an optional chat assistant to help you enquire. If you use it, the details you share in that chat — such as your name, campus, year of study, how you fund your studies, and a WhatsApp number or email — are used to pre-qualify your enquiry and pass a short summary to that property's manager. To generate its replies, the assistant sends your messages to a third-party AI provider (Moonshot AI, which operates Kimi) whose servers are outside South Africa — see the cross-border note below. Using the assistant is optional: you can always message a landlord or resident directly instead.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information. We use trusted processors to run the service: Supabase (hosting and database), Resend (sending emails such as application and message notifications), and — only if you use the optional chat assistant — Moonshot AI (Kimi) to power it. Landlords and students otherwise see only what the features above intend them to see.
Cross-border transfers
Some of our processors are based outside South Africa. In particular, the optional AI assistant (Moonshot AI / Kimi) processes the details you share in that chat on servers outside the country. We only transfer the information needed to provide that feature, and only when you choose to use it. If you'd rather your information stay within our core systems, simply don't use the assistant and contact the landlord directly.
Your rights (POPIA)
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, and you may object to processing. Email privacy@digshub.co.za and we will respond.
Security
Access to data is controlled at the database level (row-level security), so users can only see what they are entitled to.
